How to Reach Kerala

The beautiful state of Kerala is situated in the south western part of India. West of this state is the Arabian Sea, and to the east is the Western Ghats mountain range, which separates the state of Tamil Nadu from Kerala. Reach Kerala by air, Sea, and Road.

Kerala is the only state in India where two airports, having the Tourist Visa on Arrival enabled with Electronic Travel Authorization.

Kerala has welcomed three religions into India through its ancient port Muziris and Pattanam, now called Kodungallur. The foremost Jewish settlements in the country were in Kerala established in 961 BC during the time of King Solomon then the ruler of Israel. Christianity came first to Kerala with the arrival of an Apostle of Jesus, St. Thomas in 52 AD with the establishment of a church by the Apostle. Islam came to India through Kerala in 629 AD. The first Islamic Mosque, Cheraman Juma Masjid, was built here. It is believed that the cosmopolitan and gentle characters of the Keralite folks stems from these early meetings with foreign persons.

The months which follow till the end of September are periods of heavy rain and is the first state in India to be hit by the monsoon winds, Kerala receives plentiful rainfall. Northeast monsoon is also referred to as Reverse monsoons with heavy rain accompanied by lightning and thunder. This season are in the months of October and November. Kerala has a rich cultural heritage and is influenced by three faiths of Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Music, various dance forms, attractive sculptures and religious traditions upholds the cultural traditions of the state. Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Koodiyattom, Thullal, Thiruvathira kali are some of the dance forms of Kerala which has evolved many centuries ago. Kalaripayattu, is recognized as one of the oldest and most scientific martial art form in the world. It is believed to be originated as a style in Kerala during 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD.

Kerala is well-known for its extensive variety of handicrafts works. The prominent works are sandalwood items, woodcraft, handlooms and metal work (especially brass and copper). The cuisine in Kerala has a wide range to choose from. The primary diet of Kerala is rice. Choose from a variety of steamed, fried treats and sea food. Coconut kernel is commonly used in dishes. Kerala is rich in spices and these spices are mostly used for flavouring food. Meals comprising of several courses are also served on banana leaves that makes dining a remarkable experience.

Kerala is also known as the land of festivals falling throughout the year. Mentioning a few:Onam is one of the biggest festival of Kerala and last for ten days and conveys out the best of Kerala culture and tradition. Beautifully decorated Pookalam(floral carpets), Kaikottikali a dance form, the Onasadya (the festival feast), magnificent Snake Boat Race, are some of the most incredible features of Onam.

Cochin Carnival is one festival conducted every year to welcomes New Year in a grand manner on the Eve Dec 31. Lighting of Papanji a tradition inherited from Portuguese (Huge Santa-like figure) to bid good-bye to former year and to welcome New Year, followed by a celebration with music and dance till dawn.

Trissur Pooram, also known as Festivals of Festivals is the most famous temple festival celebrated in kerala. Trissur Pooram is held by the end of April and mid of May. Two temple festivities compete with each other during this festival. More than 50 decorated elephants along with huge temple orchestration normally associated by 200 musicians, makes it a visual treat. Huge decorations and illumination is erected across the city, Heavy fireworks which is considered as one of the lengthiest fireworks in the world.

Everyday Clothes

Wear clothes that cover the legs and shoulders, avoiding tight-fitting and revealing clothes. Men and women should follow the same guidelines. For most locations and seasons in Kerala, thin, loose linen or cotton pants and button-down shirts will keep you comfortable. It is advisable to wear Cotton outfits, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen lotion, in hot, sunny and humid climate.

Nudity

Nudity is not permitted in restricted in all public places in Kerala including the beaches.

Temples and Religious Sites

Before visiting any temples or religious places In Kerala, one must follow certain codes and guidelines. Some religious places in Kerala have dress codes, like covering your head, being barefooted, etc. The customs and guidelines may vary for each places of religious importance, Travelers are recommended to obey with them, so as it doesn’t offend religious sentiments of the respective community.

Airways
